Event in Cologne
Dear YKW Alumni, dear Young BCCG members*, dear friends,
We are very pleased to invite you to the first “Contemporary Issues” jointly organized by the Young BCCG NRW and the YKWA.
We are going to discuss
“The British & the Germans – Mutual respect, love or dislike?”
with Holger Geißler, Member of the Board, YouGov Germany
“Briten und Deutsche haben sich von je her bewundert – nur nie zur selben Zeit.” This quote by the former German ambassador to the United Kingdom shows vividly that the relationship between the British and the Germans has never been easy. Stereotyping has a long tradition on either side of the channel. Brits like to mock the Germans for their Prussian heritage and their affinity to Sauerkraut and Würstchen. And every German remembers the “Wembley Goal” well and pictures of pale-skinned, drunken and sunburnt Brits on the beaches of Italy and Spain.
But since the World Cup 2006 in Germany things seems to be improving. The mutual respect is growing and the opposite image of the two neighbours is getting better. At the same time on political issues like the European Union the citizens of both countries have shown significant differences in their attitudes.
The presentation will reflect actual cross-comparative studies that YouGov ran in recent years about similarities and differences between the Germans and the British. It will draw an amusing and entertaining view on the present and the future of the German-British-relationship.
